Malaysia wins UN tourism award

Malaysia's home- stay programme won the United Nations World Tourism Organisation's (UNWTO) Ulysses Award in the Innovation in Public Policy and Governance category at an award presentation ceremony in Istanbul recently. Opulentus MalaysiaTourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said it was the first Ulysses Award won by Malaysia since it was introduced in 2003. She said the homestay programme had attracted more visitors to Malaysia wanting to experience local life. Based on statistics, said Dr Ng, Malaysia recorded 213,266 tourist arrivals during the first eight months of this year compared with 141,163 people during the corresponding period last year. Besides giving tourists a new experience, the homestay programme also helped to generate economic activities for local residents through sale of souvenirs and food, she added. Dr Ng said the programme was popular among foreigners, including Singaporeans, whose students participated in the homestay programme because it provided them the opportunity to learn the culture and way of life of the locals.
